Afghanistan Youth Orchestra and Afghanistan National Institute of Music in Exile Strongly Condemn the Burning of Musical Instruments by the Taliban in Parwan and Laghman Provinces
Date: 18 February 2026
Location: Braga, Portugal
The Afghanistan Youth Orchestra and the Afghanistan National Institute of Music in Exile express their deep concern and profound sorrow over recent reports of the burning of hundreds of musical instruments by the authoritarian Taliban regime in the provinces of Parwan and Laghman. We condemn these actions in the strongest possible terms.
This act represents not only a direct assault on art and culture, but also a deliberate attempt to erase the cultural identity and artistic heritage of the Afghan people. Throughout history, music has been an integral part of Afghanistan’s social and cultural life, serving as a powerful medium for expression, social cohesion, the transmission of values, and the celebration of the country’s rich cultural diversity.
Since the Taliban’s return to power, thousands of musical instruments have reportedly been destroyed, and music has been effectively banned nationwide. These measures have deprived millions of Afghans of their fundamental cultural and artistic rights and have created a climate of repression targeting artists, musicians, and supporters of the arts.
The Afghanistan Youth Orchestra and the Afghanistan National Institute of Music in Exile consider these actions to be a clear violation of cultural rights and fundamental freedoms. We call upon the international community, cultural institutions, and human rights organizations not to remain silent in the face of this alarming trend, and to take urgent and meaningful action to protect Afghanistan’s musical heritage and provide tangible support to Afghan artists.
We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to preserving, promoting, and safeguarding Afghan music. Despite all restrictions and challenges, we firmly believe that art and music will endure, and that the voice of Afghanistan’s cultural heritage cannot be silenced.
